More Monday update: Kirkpatrick has setback; Cook getting checked; No work with Saints

Bengals No. 1 pick Dre Kirkpatrick has had a setback after developing soreness in his knee following Sunday's workout. He didn't practice Monday and head coach Marvin Lewis nodded at him as he left Paul Brown Stadium with a trainer to get reevaluated.

"We've got time so we're just going to keep working with him," Lewis said, but Kirkpatrick has only had three practices since he developed a bone spur around his knee last month.

Kirkpatrick was supposed to make his debut Thursday in Indianapolis (7 p.m.-Cincinnati's Channel 12), but that doesn't look like it's going to happen now and his time frame looks to be scrambled.

There also seems to be some uncertainty about center Kyle Cook after he injured his foot last week against the Packers. Lewis said "there's no way" Cook can play against the Colts but wouldn't elaborate except to say he went to the doctor Monday.

"It's a concern because he's not out there," Lewis said. "He's going to see the doctor. He finished the game. We'll see."

Lewis said free-agent rookie Trevor Robinson of Notre Dame, who didn't play center until he got here, gets the start against the Colts.

"He's done a great job," Lewis said. "Twenty percent of the NFL is undrafted every year. He's one of those great stories. (Notre Dame) Coach (Brian) Kelly couldn't have spoken higher about the guy and we worked hard to sign him after the draft."

SAINTS IN TOWN: With Hurricane Isaac bearing down on the Gulf Coast, the beleaguered Saints are scheduled to practice at Paul Brown Stadium on Tuesday but they won't work with the Bengals. Since Lewis doesn't expect his first-teamers to play much Thursday, he looked into having them work in an up-tempo, non-contact session with the Saints fast-break offense but it didn't pan out.

In 2007 Saints head coach Sean Payton brought his team north for some joint practices to prepare for a preseason game the Saints beat the Bengals at PBS, 27-19.

Payton, of course, isn't with the team. A former Miami of Ohio assistant, Payton is serving a one-year suspension because of Bountygate. And it's one of interim head coach Joe Vitt's last acts before he hands over the club to offensive line coach Aaron Kromer for the first portion of the regular season as he serves his own suspension.

The Saints could also have a walkthrough Wednesday before they fly to Nashville for Thursday night's game against the Titans. The Bengals have a walkthrough in the morning Wednesday before busing to Indianapolis for their Thursday night game against the Colts (7 p.m.-Cincinnati's Channel 12).

Some teams have viewed joint practices as a way to put some juice back into training camp in the scaled-back world of the new collective bargaining agreement. Lewis sounds interested in exploring it for the Bengals in the future.

"There are positives to that," Lewis said. "Anytime you get a chance to work against somebody in a different color helmet the intensity level picks up, so it's similar to what you get in the first preseason game where everything gets heightened up. 'Here we go. It's the real deal.' Even if it's practice against another team, whether it's a thud-type practice or a scrimmage-type situation, it's good work for you."

Even though this one didn't work out, Cincinnati was a logical spot for the Saints layover. The Bengals have ties with the Saints dating back to the '07 practices and Lewis said owners Mike Brown of the Bengals and Tom Benson of the Saints "have a great relationship."

"It's workable. I guess the hotel situation in Cincinnati is easy because everything is so close. Logistically it works out," Lewis said.

MORE INJURIES: Also not on the field Monday were defensive tackle Nick Hayden (unknown ailment) as well as tight end Jermaine Gresham. Also out were outside linebacker Dontay Moch and rookie wide receiver Mohammed Sanu with unknown ailments and rookie outside backer Emmnauel Lamur (hamstring). Defensive linemen Robert Geathers (knee) and Pat Sims (hamstring) were still working on the side.

ALLEN READY FOR 10th: Cornerback Jason Allen hasn't played a snap in the preseason and he sounded as if he's not sure about Thursday's finale. And he didn't practice again Monday.

But with 94 games for the Dolphins and Texans, Allen doesn't think he'll have a problem lining up for Opening Day in Baltimore Sept. 10. There are already three corners in front of him—Leon Hall, Nate Clements and Terence Newman—and Adam Jones expects to play Thursday.

"If anything, I'm in condition," said Allen, who wouldn't reveal his injury. "I've got a good grasp of the defense being in the league for a while playing different schemes. They're all the same, but at the same time they're different. You have to know your responsibility and where your help is going to be and communicate. In this defense you have to communicate well and our guys do a heck of a job communicating."

MOORE WAIVED: The Bengals got down to the 75 limit Monday when they waived free agent rookie wide receiver Kashif Moore of Connecticut after he had one catch for five yards this preseason.
